The gigabit broadband network across the Lancashire town of Blackburn has been officially launched.
Oliver Dowden CBE, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, spoke about the ‘game changing’ network being rolled out across the region in a virtual launch this week.
IX Wireless Limited is a telecommunications infrastructure provider. Formed in late 2017, IXW secured code operator status in early 2018 to drive the rapid expansion of its innovative ultra speed network in the North of England and beyond.
Unlike traditional “dig and cover” operators, the IX Wireless network deploys a fibre ring, carried above ground on its own telegraph pole infrastructure, as well as fixed wireless technologies to deliver gigabit capable broadband services to the premises.
Our means of network deployment, combined with expertise in planning and liaison with local authorities, has enabled IX Wireless to achieve rapid network roll-outs at around 15% of what it would cost traditional infrastructure companies.
IX Wireless operates in tandem with its sister company, 6G Internet Limited, which resells innovative and price competitive connectivity packages to both consumers and businesses with speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second. The network also offers wholesale opportunities for other communications providers.
As a strong proponent of ‘internet for everyone’, IX Wireless has dedicated 20% of its network capacity for use by digital inclusion and local social initiatives. This capacity is not included as an afterthought, but is an integral part of our network design, where we identify socially and economically deprived areas to ensure access to our network is provided. This philosophy is in our DNA, so that we include those who have been digitally left behind and ‘level up’ the towns and cities in which our network is deployed.
To date IX Wireless and 6G Internet have been wholly self-funded.
IX Wireless is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cohiba Communications Limited, a Limefield Group company.
2019 saw IX Wireless Limited participate successfully in the UK Government’s Gigabit Voucher Scheme, with ten separate schemes approved in Northern England. Beyond the Government Scheme, IX Wireless increased its network expansion and its audited accounts reflect the creation of an infrastructure network capable of significant revenue generation, thus driving the Net Present Valuation fixed asset valuation to £16m. 2020 has seen the Blackburn project reach completion on target with the network capable of reaching around 45,000 premises in the town (around 80%). Given the service offering and competitive price point, 6G Internet forecasts are to achieve 20% market penetration of premises passed, supplying a typical 100/20mbps service.
Looking further forward, 2020 has seen the completion of detailed planning for a further five towns in North West England. Forecasts for 2021 are to achieve an additional 250,000 premises passed. Plans beyond 2021 involve expansion into major Northern conurbations and achieving an additional 500,000 premises “passed” per annum. 7 million 'passed' premises have been planned and our current target is to reach 4 million 'on net' premises by 2025.
At IX Wireless, we have been delivering internet since early 2001 using traditional leased lines. Over the last few years we have moved into wireless access using the most advanced radio technologies available in the world.
